For example, why would someone join an online membership or community?

…AND…

What makes them stay once they’ve joined?

These questions and more are answered in this free video…

What Do You Think?

Did you like the video?

We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Hey Stu thanks for this second video… glad to see you’re joining the rest of us in the 21st century and finally running a webinar for your awesome product :-)

    • Stu McLaren April 22, 2010 at 9:25 am #

Yes, we are excited about conducting a variety of upcoming webinars.

      • Cheri Plett April 25, 2010 at 12:29 am #

        Yeah for Webinars.
People really like that connection Stu.
        Keep up the great work.

Stu great content…These are not only Keys to a thriving community, but a thriving business as well. Keep up the excellent work!

    • Stu McLaren April 22, 2010 at 9:24 am #

Thanks Robby! I agree… these 5 keys can definitely serve as the foundation for a great business.

Thanks Stu, enjoyed the 5 C’s of Community.

Seth Golin has being talks about Tribes for the last couple of years.

What is your take on Tribes and Communities. Do you see them as equals? And do you see any relationship between both? How do you see a membership working for Tribes?

    Thanks,

    You are THE MAN Stu!

That is a great reminder that you need a total, well rounded approach to create a success membership site.

Too many people pick just one of the 5 C’s and focus all of the energy there.

The real key is to build all 5 into your business.

Great job! Good call not driving in this one. I thought you almost missed a red there. I was scared.

    Can’t wait for the webinar!

Right to the heart of business success!

Would love to learn what wordpress plugins other wishlist member users are utilizing to help build out their community online. For example, our members would benefit if we could have public pages on our site (one for each member) that serves as a member directory, with links to their blogs/author websites. Of course, we want our users to be able to create these pages themselves or actually, “fill in the blanks,” we give them. We are still trying to figure out what will work best with wishlist member. Any ideas?

    • Catherine December 5, 2011 at 4:50 pm #

Hi Staci, I’d like to do that as well in another organization I’m part of. We’re in the process of building our site and were surprised to find Wishlist doesn’t provide this feature. Fooey.

  6. Marsha Stopa April 22, 2010 at 4:34 pm #

Thanks. A good summary. I took notes. :-)
One note — the sound was not clear on this video, whereas it was super clear on your first video. Don’t know if anyone else noticed that.

    Keep up the good work.

    Awesome Stu!

I’m currently helping multiple clients with integrating an iPhone app that hooks directly into their membership site! This is taking what you’ve said and expanding it to allow the “community” to overflow the bounds of the online site in the real, on-the-go world.

It also allows paying members to show their friends just exactly what they are apart of.

    Looking forward to the webinar!

Stu, very helpful content. Thank you. I like the comedy aspect also. Bearded guy looks like Kevin Smith, I wondered if he is a Wishlist member. LOL.

Ok, you got me involved and participating because I noticed the audio was only on the left channel. Was that on purpose to get people to notice, because if it was intended, it worked (for me)!

Did you put subsonic/subliminal audio on the right channel? Hmmm… Oh man, I’m turning this comment thing into Youtube.

But yeah, great video. And Wishlist Member is a great product and the only one I know that works seamlessly with WordPress and integrates well with other plugins like Paypal, Aweber and 1Shoppingcart.

    • Tony Denson April 22, 2010 at 5:16 pm #

I was totally expecting bearded guy to be removing the beard and the girls swooning over the “upgrade” and his willingness to respond to the “marketplace”

And YES over all the video series is shaping up to offer some great starter points for business

    • Stu McLaren April 22, 2010 at 10:02 pm #

What’s funny is the “bearded guy” (Wray) is actually a HUGE Kevin Smith fan – fancy that! LOL

    • Wray April 23, 2010 at 8:29 am #

Haha, I’ve never gotten the Kevin Smith comparison before :) I guess we bearded fellows look a lot alike ;)

    Hi Stu:

Love the tips. My partner and I are building a writing club. We will give great content, a forum for helping one another and developing contacts, links for resouces, and quartly loyalty gifts. The biggest thing is our monthly give away. This is what it is. On level Silver, 21$ monthly, we have a short story submission. The one chosen will have the story posted on our coverted man page for the entire month for all to read, and (drum roll please), a gift of 400-600$. It could be a computer, ipad, smart phone, t.v., etc. On the Gold level, 31$ monthly, the same will be done but the prize will be 600-1,000$. That is what we are building. If some of the members can use these ideas, great. Look for “eaglefeather-writing-club”.

    • Stu McLaren April 22, 2010 at 10:01 pm #

      Very nice!

I love it… it involves them, motivates them and provides them with all kinds of encouragement to get involved. Well done.

Thanks for all the great comments everyone!

Personally, I’m LOVIN’ all the ideas that are being shared just in the comments of our last two posts.

    You guys are AWESOME :)

@Staci – We’ll definitely outline what plugins work well for building a community (that’s what will be covered on the webinar).

@Pat and Lorna – I think revisiting “Tribes” would be a great idea. Perhaps we’ll do that in the near future :)

    Lots more to come.

    Stay tuned!

Great videos, Stu! Your contribution is right on time because I’m about to launch my first community membership site. :-)

I’ve already got inspired by some creative ideas thanks to your videos – awesome, thx!

I would appreciate some extra insight on how to manage the community without getting overstressed. Sending news through email, adding messages in a facebook group, tweating with twitter, doing webinars, answering to forum questions, answering email, writing new content, etc. can become in my mind overwhelming if badly organized.
How to implement all this and grow steadily?

How to engage other members in this growth?

How do you deal with people who want to share some personal content but who are not in alignment with your “philosophy”? (in other words, how to say no politely or how to somehow solve the issue without creating bad feelings)

My content will be personal and spiritual growth (life after death, ufo and mysteries, healthy nutrition, emotional management, law of attraction, healing techniques, meditation, etc.),
so my content must be filtered based on decades of experience.

I would also like to learn how to create a well organized community with wishlist, so when they sign up they know where to find what and the design stays appealing and clear.

Sorry for all of these questions/requests, but I hope I inspired you some good topics too for the upcoming webinar! ;-)

    Can’t wait for the webinar.

Wish u tons of magical moments!

I like these tips repeated (I do remember them from class but doesn’t mean I’m practicing them yet), and not buried behind the wall where I have to login as that’s too difficult when I’m short on time.

  22. Mel April 29, 2010 at 4:13 pm #

Good stuff!. Those 5 C’s are like the stages of growth of a community. Get the first 2 done and you’re on your way. Then build in the other ones to solidify the community. Keep the tips coming! Thanks.

    Hey Stu,

Great video – I always learn so much from you! Your 5 C’s are exactly what I need to build my Your Performing Edge community after returning from coaching my athletes at the OLYMPICS in VANCOUVER!

Any chance of making these videos embeddable to promote WLM? Or downloadable so I can upload to my server or AWS?

    • WPWL Team June 22, 2010 at 3:02 pm #

I’m not sure if we will be able to do that in the near future as there is a lot on our current plate, but this a good idea and one we will certainly keep in mind.

  32. Cary October 18, 2010 at 12:42 am #

I know probably a dumb idea / what plugin or system do you currently recommend as best to build community?

    • WPWL Team October 26, 2010 at 12:49 pm #

WishList Member is a pretty good plugin for building community ;) But it sounds like you might be asking about a forum? We like SimplePress as its pretty powerful.

  33. Ingrid Dinter November 30, 2010 at 3:58 pm #

    Hi Stu,
