Year 1 of WishList Products

Are you selling products on the web?   Watch this video.

After making our first “public” sale of WishList Member (our membership plugin for WordPress)  just over a year ago, we thought we’d share our “Top 3 Lessons Learned” for anyone else thinking of launching their own startup.

The Wishies…. Is this going to be like the Webby Awards?

I can easily see you and Gary Vee getting along. For a white guy you are keeping it real!

  2. Noah Fleming says:

    Nicely done Stu.

  3. Will says:

Great advice even for non-software companies, especially the monthly promotion calendar. I’m starting live streaming guitar lessons which should be fun and hopefully gets some buzz going.

  4. Thanks Stu, this was right on time…I just launched our new biz using your product yesterday!

  5. Alex Shalman says:

I love all these extra things you are doing for us, the customers. Makes your company seem very personable. :)

Really great advice btw. My frustration is the reason me and my partner are creating a product and the reason we chose wishlist member for our membership site.

Thanks for the Jing recommendation. I’ve heard it mentioned before, but your mention got me to download it and I’ll definitely be using this to explain things to people from now on.

I’m a little nervous about the support issues. I’m a dental student, and I’m playing with start ups for fun. I’ll have to hire some good help. :) Maybe even hire a boss. :)

I like your promotion calendar idea. Planning ahead will make things easier when I’m in school.

Fun sounds like a hot plan!

Stu, you and I are going to be friends, once I dig myself out of these books and have some more time to chat. :)

  6. Nina East says:

Thanks for sharing the update. It’s fun to see how it all got started and what challenge and creativity can result in.

I’ve been impressed with how good-natured your support team is – patience AND a sense of humor. What gems.
Wish I were with you all in Vegas!

  7. David Payne says:

I turned my massive frustration about how much I was procrastinating on my internet business into a product. I created a whole system for getting things done that makes it as easy as painting by numbers.

I just launched two-days ago. The support videos gave me a lot of confidence in setting up the whole system. I have found that so many of my concerns about running site logistics are taken care of by WishListMember (to my great relief).

I’ve never come across the Marketing Calendar before but it’s a great idea, especially for getting those people who are sitting on the fence off of it. :)

  8. Awesome video Stu!

To many people overlook THEIR frustrations and get all caught up with “what’s my niche”…. Excellent advice as always. What your niche? What frustrates you or your clients?

Also, fun??? Who has fun? I’ll be seeing you in a couple of hours specifically for that purpose…

To many entrepreneurs forget to have fun and end up stressed out and on edge all of the time. The reason most of us start our own is business IS specifically so that we can have more time to do the things we love. Great reminder (funny how many people forget that along the way)

    Buckle up!

    Lance

  9. Ron Matthews says:

Great insights. Thank you for being so forthright about your experiences.

  10. Angelito says:

Wow. You guys are awesome! Talk about giving great value over and over again. I purchased Wishlist because I INSTANTLY saw its value, but I never expected the extra golden nuggets you guys provide AFTER my purchase.

Thanks for being a great example to every aspiring business owner.

Looking forward to more awesome releases from you!

  11. Sue says:

Thanks for sharing…it’s motivating to listen to someone who’s a little bit ahead on the learning curve.

We have just gone ‘live’ with a site that pushes WishList member to the limits. I believe we use every single feature (and inhale updates as soon as they are available).

I would also be really interested to hear about the things that DIDN’T go so well during the startup period, and what you learned from them.

  12. Jeff Davis says:

    Hi Stu,

I can’t say enough good things about
Wray, and the team, they really go that
extra yard, to help us technophobes, so
that we too can run this awesome software.

I’m fighting the urge to overwhelm my
members with all the content I have.

I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished
so far, and WLM has just been the bomb,
    loved the videos…

can’t wait till I graduate the school,
    and get that first member!

This is by far the best deal I ever got
    on the internet.

The support team is second to none.

    Thanks!

    Sincerely,

    Jeff Davis

  13. Andrew Lock says:

    Great video Stu.

Jing is an awesome tool, one of my favorite discoveries in the last year or so.

Many a great product has been born out of frustration! Totally agree with your advice on that.

    Regards

    Andrew

  15. Great video, Stu. I love Wishlist Member. I started my membership site in January 2009 and it’s a revenue stream that is in the high 5-figures so far and continues to grow month after month. I appreciate you and what you do. Can’t wait for the wishies!

Hi, I have really enjoyed watching this video.

It was good of you to share the lessons you have learnt and it helps others to watch for pitfalls to avoid.

How do you see Wishlist developing in the next few years?

    Thanks Aly

  22. Dvorah says:

    Hi Stu,

THANK YOU for helping us take our membership sites and thinking to the next level.

In the video you talk about setting up a membership site in a way that requires them to pass a test and access/digest the content before they move on to the next level.

    How would this be implemented?

    Thanks again!
